Melissa Nolan seeks fitness challenges within the support of community, and she is excited to pursue that mission as a coach with Hotova CrossFit. Originally from Chanhassen, Minnesota, and now living in Monticello, Melissa spent her early years as a ballerina. She trained in classical ballet into her senior year in high school; once she stopped dancing, Melissa started doing CrossFit, after originally being inspired by her father.

“I needed something to keep me in shape and going to the gym just wasn’t enough,” Melissa said. “I am not motivated at all when exercising on my own, so my exercise routine largely consisted of running, and was sporadic, at best.” Melissa also enjoys hanging out with her family and friends, and she loves reading. She said her dad and sister had previously done some CrossFit training, and they found Hotova online.

Within a year or so of beginning CrossFit, Melissa decided to become certified to coach. She also works as a housecleaner, and then coaches classes at Hotova both before and after her day job. “I love the community, and I love the challenge,” Melissa admitted. “I love the way CrossFit brings people together and challenges them to push harder than they’ve ever pushed before.”

Coach Melissa is a big fan of box jumps and cleans. She does not have a favorite Workout of the Day, but she especially enjoys anything with barbells. Members appreciate Melissa’s quiet but direct approach, the way she encourages athletes at all stages keeps them coming into the box: “You do not need to be in shape to do CrossFit,” she said. “We have all levels here at Hotova, so, please, do not be intimidated by the pictures you see of CrossFitters or the workouts; all workouts are scaled to the individual.” Melissa encouraged beginners to take the step into the supportive Hotova family, “The community we have here is beyond incredible—you might become faster and stronger than you have ever been, but the lessons you learn from the people, the friends you make, and the pain you share are priceless.”

Coach Melissa leads classes on Mondays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she coaches at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. She gets in her own WODs weekdays at 4:30 p.m. Melissa’s personal goal is to complete Fran in under three minutes. For Hotova, she dreams of expansion while still maintaining the close-knit community feel and being invested in clients’ whole lives. “Exercise is only part of the equation when it comes to living a healthy life,” the coach said. “So, it would be my dream that we, as coaches, athletes, and a community, would continue to push each other, not only inside of the box, but outside of the box, as well.”
